The short version
PhenQ is a caffeinated daytime capsule that may suit someone who wants an energy lift with a modest appetite nudge before lunch, likes a long 60-day guarantee, and is willing to buy on the brand's word. The ingredient choices are plausible, but the brand doesn't publish per-ingredient doses, the finished product has no independent trial, and the caffeine rules it out of the evening window where most snacking happens. It scores 13 out of 25 on our rubric.
How it scores

How it claims to work
Marketed to support weight management across several pathways at once — thermogenesis and fat metabolism, appetite/craving control, energy, and mood — as a daily structure/function supplement.
The evidence
Marketing cites a manufacturer-sponsored study on the branded a-Lacys Reset blend rather than independent RCTs on the finished product; most actives are hidden in proprietary blends.
Strengths
- Caffeine provides a genuine daytime energy and appetite-blunting kick.
- Touches several mechanisms (thermogenic, appetite, energy, mood).
- Long 60-day money-back guarantee.
Watch-outs
- Key actives are hidden in proprietary blends (a-Lacys Reset, Capsimax).
- Contains caffeine — not for after 3 p.m. or the evening craving window.
- Finished-product evidence is largely manufacturer-sponsored.
Price & value
Taste & format: Capsules taken twice daily (breakfast and lunch); the brand advises against dosing after 3 p.m. due to caffeine.
PhenQ: the full review
What it is and who it is for
PhenQ is a multi-ingredient weight-management capsule from Wolfson Brands. The brand markets it to support several pathways at once: thermogenesis and fat metabolism, appetite and cravings, energy, and mood.
It holds our Best for Daytime Energy award, and the award name is the honest frame. The brand says to take it with breakfast and lunch and advises against dosing after 3 p.m. because of the caffeine, which makes it a morning tool by construction.
It's for someone who wants a felt effect during the day, values a long guarantee, and doesn't need to audit the label. It isn't for anyone whose problem is after-dinner snacking or anyone sensitive to stimulants. It lands 7th of 8 in our appetite suppressant pill rankings, almost entirely on transparency and evidence quality.
What the label says
The ingredient list reads long: a-Lacys Reset (alpha-lipoic acid, cysteine and magnesium), Capsimax capsicum extract, chromium picolinate, caffeine anhydrous, nopal cactus, L-carnitine, InnoSlim, B vitamins and iodine. Two capsules a day, 60 per bottle.
What's missing is the amounts. We looked on the brand's own site and couldn't find a readable per-ingredient milligram breakdown. The signature actives sit inside proprietary blends, and the caffeine total isn't stated.
Independent reviewers who have photographed the panel report roughly 75 mg of caffeine, 50 mg of Capsimax, 20 mg of nopal cactus and 20 mcg of chromium per capsule. We pass those along as third-party figures, not verified ones.
| Ingredient | Reported per capsule (unverified) | Dose used in the research |
|---|---|---|
| Capsimax (capsaicinoids) | About 50 mg, roughly 1 mg capsaicinoids | Minimum effective dose of 2 mg capsaicinoids before a single meal |
| Chromium picolinate | About 20 mcg | 200 to 1,000 mcg elemental chromium a day, 600 mcg in the craving trial |
| Nopal cactus | About 20 mg | Fiber satiety works on a grams scale |
| Caffeine anhydrous | About 75 mg | 1 mg/kg cut breakfast intake about 10% in one trial; 3 mg/kg did nothing |
That single fact does most of the work in this review. You can't check an ingredient against a study without a number.
What the evidence shows
There's no independent trial on the finished product. The brand's marketing points at a manufacturer-sponsored study of the branded a-Lacys Reset blend, not the capsule in the bottle. So take the reported figures at face value and see how far each ingredient gets.
Capsaicinoids have the cleanest data. A meta-analysis of 8 trials found capsaicinoids taken before a meal cut intake at that meal by 310 kJ, about 74 calories, with a minimum effective dose of 2 mg. Capsimax is standardized to roughly 2% capsaicinoids, so 50 mg per capsule is about 1 mg. The trials dosed before a single meal, and PhenQ splits its capsules between breakfast and lunch, so per meal you'd be at half the studied floor.
Alpha-lipoic acid's evidence is real and small. A dose-response meta-analysis of 63 randomized trials found ALA lowered body weight by 0.64 kg and fasting glucose by 5.28 mg/dL; an earlier pool of 10 trials put the weight difference at 1.27 kg. The awkward one: a 2025 meta-analysis restricted to overweight and obese adults, the population PhenQ markets to, pooled 11 trials and 704 people and found no significant effect of ALA on lipids, insulin resistance or fasting glucose. Its authors called for higher doses. PhenQ won't tell you what dose you're getting.
Chromium's craving reputation rests on one trial: 600 mcg a day in 113 adults with atypical depression reduced carbohydrate craving on symptom questionnaires. The reported 20 mcg per capsule is a fraction of that. We covered the whole file in the science of chromium for cravings. Nopal at 20 mg is a label ingredient, not a fiber dose; fiber satiety works on a grams scale, as the glucomannan evidence shows.
Which leaves caffeine, PhenQ's most reliable active and the one it shares with a cup of coffee. In a double-blind crossover of 50 adults, 1 mg/kg lowered lab breakfast intake by about 10%, 3 mg/kg did not, and neither dose changed appetite ratings or what people ate for the rest of the day. The authors concluded caffeine has weak, transient effects and doesn't work as an appetite suppressant.
Side effects, tolerability and who should skip it
The stimulant is the main tolerability question. Caffeine brings jitters and anxiety for some people, and a sleep cost. A meta-analysis of 24 studies found caffeine cuts total sleep time by 45 minutes, drops sleep efficiency by 7% and shaves 11.4 minutes off deep sleep. Its authors turned that into a rule: a 107 mg coffee should be finished at least 8.8 hours before bed.
Credit where it's due: PhenQ's advice not to dose after 3 p.m. is roughly consistent with that math for a 75 mg capsule. The consequence is still a hard limit. A product you must stop taking mid-afternoon can't help with the craving window most people struggle with, which is after dinner.
The wider caution comes from US emergency department surveillance: weight-loss and energy products accounted for 71.8% of supplement cases involving palpitations, chest pain or a racing heart. PhenQ's reported caffeine is modest, but you can't manage a dose you can't see, and it stacks on whatever coffee you already drink.
Skip it if you're caffeine-sensitive, if you already drink 2 or more coffees a day, if your snacking problem is in the evening, or if you take medication for blood sugar or thyroid, since chromium can nudge glucose down. Fiber load is low, so bloating is a smaller concern than with glucomannan pills. Talk to your doctor first if you're pregnant, nursing or managing a health condition.
Price and value
A bottle is 60 capsules for $69.99. At 2 a day that's 30 days and about $2.33 a day. A subscription is offered.
The guarantee is the genuine strength: 60 days money-back, which is longer than most of this aisle. Read the terms, since the brand subtracts a 5% handling fee from refunds.
On value we score it 3 out of 5. You pay a mid-range price for a long ingredient list whose amounts you can't audit, and the reported figures sit at or under the studied floors. For comparison, Calocurb runs about $2.00 a day at one serving with every dose on the label, and Hydroxycut Hardcore delivers a disclosed 265 mg of caffeine for 83 cents.
How to take it and what to expect
One capsule with breakfast and one with lunch, nothing after 3 p.m. That's the brand's instruction and it fits the caffeine evidence.
Expect a daytime energy lift and, at most, a small dent in how much you eat at the meal you take it before. The caffeine research puts that effect in a window of about 0.5 to 4 hours before eating, and it fades with daily use as tolerance builds. Don't chase the dose when it does.
Don't expect help at 9 p.m. Caffeine's half-life runs 5 to 6 hours, an evening dose fragments sleep, and short sleep pushed next-day intake up by about 253 calories in a meta-analysis of 41 trials. We laid out that timing problem in when to take a craving supplement.
How it compares
The closest head-to-head is Calocurb vs PhenQ: one product hides its doses, the other shows its number, and the best study behind it used double the serving. Calocurb is caffeine-free, can be taken before dinner, and has randomized human appetite trials on its single active. It also costs about $4.00 a day at the full protocol.
Against the other stimulant, Hydroxycut Hardcore is cheaper and discloses its caffeine at 265 mg a serving, a much heavier load with the same evening limitation.

Frequently asked questions
Does PhenQ work for weight loss?
No independent trial has tested the finished product; the brand's marketing points at a manufacturer-sponsored study of its a-Lacys Reset blend. The individual ingredients have modest evidence, such as capsaicinoids cutting about 74 calories at a meal and alpha-lipoic acid moving weight by roughly 0.6 to 1.3 kg in meta-analyses, but PhenQ doesn't publish its doses, so you can't check whether the capsule reaches those amounts.
What are PhenQ's side effects?
The caffeine is the main one: jitters for sensitive people and a sleep cost if taken too late. A meta-analysis found caffeine cuts total sleep by 45 minutes and sleep efficiency by 7%. The brand advises not dosing after 3 p.m., which fits that evidence. Chromium can nudge blood sugar down, so check with a doctor if you take glucose or thyroid medication.
How much caffeine is in PhenQ?
The label lists caffeine anhydrous but not the amount. Independent reviewers who photographed the panel report about 75 mg per capsule, roughly 150 mg a day at the full dose, but that's a third-party figure we can't verify against the brand's own site.
How long does PhenQ take to work?
The caffeine effect is immediate and short: the appetite research puts it in a window of about 0.5 to 4 hours before a meal, and it fades with daily use. The other ingredients' evidence comes from trials running weeks to months at doses the label doesn't disclose, so there's no basis for a timeline on those.
How much does PhenQ cost?
$69.99 for 60 capsules, which is 30 days at the label's 2 a day, about $2.33 a day. A subscription is offered. The 60-day money-back guarantee is one of the longer ones in the category, though the terms subtract a 5% handling fee.
When should I take PhenQ?
One capsule with breakfast and one with lunch, and not after 3 p.m., per the brand. The caffeine rules it out of the evening, so if after-dinner snacking is your problem, a caffeine-free product is the better fit.
